As a child, Marlene Heron recalls helping her mom teaching preschoolers on Sunday mornings (snack was the best part!). She assisted with Vacation Bible School during the summers in her teenage years. From 1988 until 1993, children, youth, and collegians were ministry areas where she served with her husband. Finally, a mother of two children and pastor's wife (which seemed like being a single parent at church), she decided for the sake of "church schedule sanity" to serve wherever her children were. A secondary reason was to make sure her children were being spiritually fed.
During all that volunteer time, Marlene discovered her strength was leading small groups. She made a serious commitment to use her spiritual gift of sheperding and said "no" to other areas of service in the children's department. That strong commitment fostered a passion for children. One day, a light clicked on! She realized CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE CHURCH!!!!! Since then, serving children has been a priority!!!
Her style as a small group leader is fun, personal, and lots of conversation. Marlene wants to be interrupted, every Sunday, by a child with God questions. In her opinion, the best small group agenda is the burning questions and spiritual needs of a child. Teaming up with parents to spiritually form their child is an honor, yet humbling position. "Let the little children come unto me". . .what a sacred place!
Believe, Receive, Grow, and Serve are key steps in being a Christ follower. Marlene's most recent goal is to provide opportunities for your children to serve. Parents, thank you for letting me be your assistant coach. You have the most rewarding role as head coach, the spiritual guide for your child! May God Bless!!!
